Dooars

‘Dooars’ (door to Bhutan), this region also forms a gateway to the hill stations of North Bengal, Sikkim, Bhutan & the North-Eastern states. The dense natural forests interwoven with lush green tea gardens are cries-crossed by Teesta, Raidak, Torsha, Jaldhaka, Kaljani and other rivers & their innumerable tributaries trotting and rolling down from the hills. The entire region is served with a network of motor-able roads running through the deep forests and tea gardens. The Bengal Dooars Railway was formed in 1891 and amalgamated with the Eastern Bengal Railway in 1941. The Bengal Dooars Railway (shortened BDR) was one of the pioneering railway companies that operated from 1893 to 1941, in Bengal province of British India, connecting the Dooars with its junction with Eastern Bengal Railway at Lalmonirhat (At Present in Bangladesh) with locations up to the foot of the Himalayas near the border with Bhutan. In 1936, the company owned 19 locomotives, 72 coaches and 473 goods wagons. A journey itself by rail or on road through this region gives immense delight to both the mind and the eyes. There is a total of 18 Dooars, 11 in West Bengal and 7in Assam.

In North, the rows of the blue mountains, below the green forests. A galaxy of trees, ferns and creepers. There are Elephants, Gaur, Rhino, many species of Deer and other animals. About 400 species of Birds fly from branch to branch of the trees, -Hornbill, Parakeet, Bulbul etc. There are rivers, Jhoras, and Kholas flowing below the forests. Amid these rivers, forests and tea gardens live indigenous tribes like Toto, Mech, Rava, Oraon Dukpa and other people.

Garumara National Park under Jalpaiguti District and Jaldapara Wildlife Sanctuary under Alipurduar District, are two notable wildlife tourism centres in India. There are wild Animals like Elephant, The Great Indian One Horned Rhinoceros, Gaur, Leopard etc. Kalipur Eco Village is famous destination under Garumara National Park and here is a beautiful watch tower Medhla.  Jatraprasad Watch Tower is very famous in Garumara for Rhino, Gaur and Leopard. Chukchuki watch Tower is famous for birds. Different species of birds live in the pond in front.  Khunia watch Tower is famous for Elephants and Gaur. Chapramari Wildlife Sanctuary   is another major tourist attraction in Dooars. Chapramari Watch Tower is besides the Forest Bunglow.  Those who likes to see wild animals, it is best to stay at any Bunglow or cottage of Garumara national Park and go to watch towers.

Jaldapara National Park declared a wildlife sanctuary in 1941 and a national park as recently as 2012. Jaldapara National Park is famous for its large population of the endangered one-horned Rhinoceros. The park is located on the banks of the Torsa River and spread across 216-sq kms of grasslands and riverine forests. The other animals one can spot here are leopards, gaurs, wild boars, spotted Deer, Barking Deer, Bisons and Elephants. Like most other wildlife reserves in the area, Jaldapara too is a Birdwatchers paradise. The rare Bengal Florican, a type of bustard can be found here. One can also spot Finn’s weavers, Hornbills crested eagles and partridges, and amongst other avian species.

Jhalong , Bindu, Paren, Lava, Loeleygaon ,  Garubathan , Buxa, Jayanti,  Kumargram , Hatipota,  Hasimara, Dalsingh Para,  Cooch Behar  etc are major Tourist attraction Places  under Dooars .
